These New Puritans
Midlake
Beach House
The Magnetic Fields
this page is quite good for a quick reminder of what we've reviewed
http://drownedinsound.com/releases/reviewed
I have enjoyed
Eels - End Times
E doing what he does best, slightly depressing but musically gorgeous tunes.
Fyfe Dangerfield - Fly Yellow Moon
Demonstrates what a good solid songwriter Fyfe is without the bells & whistles of a Guillemots album. Some great songs on the bonus CD in the deluxe set too.
These New Puritans - Hidden
Still can't quite get my head around this one but I am really liking it, but find it really hard to explain what I like about it!
Four Tet - There is Love in You
is fantastic. Really the only thing I have picked up so far.
Like a mix of The Field and Burial with his own stamp on it. Great headphone music.
This could end up being a double post, but here goes... I'm glad you've said "his own stamp",
cos from the couple of plays of the single I've heard, it sounded like it could've been made by about 1000 other artists. Will have to get a hold of the whole thing and have a proper listen.
Wanna hear the Jaga Jazzist too, but otherwise am waiting for the Massive Attack / Joanna Newsom / ASMZ / Souljazz Orchestra quadruple whammy that February offers...
You probably listened to Love Cry
which does lean on others work a bit too much imo, still a tune mind, but the rest has more Four Tet stylings and tings.
It was indeed Love Cry.
And it was indeed a tune, but I'm glad the rest sounds more Four Tet-y.
I've just remembered I wanna hear Spoon and the ATIC sampler as well, which I mention here only as a means of remembering them...
Four Tet review
for anyone who missed it http://drownedinsound.com/releases/15034 (you can rate the album out of 10 on the review page too!)
whoops
link to the review http://drownedinsound.com/releases/15034/reviews/4138859 rather than release above) (i'm clearly not very awake yet, and mind-numbed for spam-deleting duties)
Lindstrom & Christabelle - Real Life Is No Cool
Yeeeeeeah.
The Irrepressibles- Mirror Mirror
It's the only album of 2010 I've heard so far and I really quite like it.
this this this this this this this
it's soooooo good. Going to have to buy it when i get paid tomorrow.
not listened to it yet
giving it a spin now
William Basinski - Vivian & Ondine
Pop Ambient 2010 compilation
The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions thing
I second the offering
from Fyfe Dangerfield, the deluxe bonus cd has some gems on it too, Just finished listening to Beach House - Teen Dream, very impressive.

Is there anywhere I can hear this These New Puritans album to see if it appeals to me?
...and I'm going to give Jaga Jazzist a blast on spotify tomorrow
Defs TNPS
also Vampire Weekend, Four Tet, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Beach House, and Buraka Som Sistema's Fabric49 mix.
there's been loads
spoon, jaga jazzist, owen pallett, four tet.
A chap called
Robin James has an album out - could've been late Dec. But it's really good. Called Saint Jude. Check it out. Also Midlake.
Scout Niblett
The Calcination of Scout Niblett
Need to listen to it more. Very introspective. Can tell it'll be a 'grower'
January albums:
Owen Pallett- Heartland
Love this album. Have been listening to it lots repeatedly. 9/10
The Magnetic Fields- Realism
Much prefer this album compared to Distortion. So far maybe 7/10
http://open.spotify.com/album/3JaKUx1XHOR0kWiNXdje2h
Yoyoyo Acapulco- The Pleumeleuc Experience
Not had a chance to listen to this much, but I enjoyed their ep from a couple of years ago. Quirky banjo stuffs I think 7/10
http://open.spotify.com/album/01kipfyukin1nSSBT4ZCCS
Fredrik- Trilogi
I haven't even listened to all of this yet, due to excitement/not wanting to ruin it all. From Sweden, just released Tuesday, and seems to be very haunting/atmospheric and just damn lovely. Have a listen on Spotify (although it lists it as 2009). Had to go and immediately buy this new album (which is a collection of three eps) and their old album from their American label. and then ordered the album on vinyl from their own site also. The mentions of cool packaging were enough to suck me in. I'll give it an estimated/hopeful 9/10

Malory album is excellent

Lindstrom aye
Amazing combination of warm pop stylings and fantastic intelligent production. Why aren't more dance-pop/ electro albums like this?
Owen Pallett:
Beautifully produced, melodic album. Although his track-by-track guide on DiS did it NO justice at all.
These New Puritans - Hidden: Haunting and precise follow-up, with an intimidating array of influences.
Four Tet, Beach House, Surfer Blood are the others that really won me over. I think I fell most in love with the Vampire Weekend record, however.
I'm going to give Lindstrom a spin, because it sounds like my kind of thing.
Can I just say that this month has been very very good for music
2010 has been spoiling us so far.
Also: Delphic, Vampire Weekend and Four Tet have been doing it for me especially
lotsa love for These New Puritans
review is linked below, so have a read (and rate the album) to find why everyone's loving it http://drownedinsound.com/releases/15022/reviews/4138804
I've only heard 3 or 4 records released so far this year
Four Tet is easily my favourite - hence the glowing review - but These New Puritans are pushing it hard. I even got away with putting it on at work yesterday...
Otherwise the double listen through of the Hot Chip record the other day convinced me that I quite like them as a band.
What have I missed eh? Any good hip hop / electro?
Just want to throw my weight behind the support for:
Surfer Blood, Four Tet, Beach House, Pantha Du Prince and Eels.
What's that Surfer Blood LP like?
Pitchfork gave it a sparkling review
You wouldn't happen to be any relation to mitch, would you?
I'd say it's like...
90's US indie/college rock with a twist of lemon. Really great catchy songwriting, which I think is crucial for this kind of music. Definitely worth checking out.
anyone heard Chris Olley from Six by Seven's solo album?
Been meaning to checking this out http://www.myspace.com/chrisolleymusic
I've not no
I bought a few things he did as 'Twelve' and they were either awesome or truly terrible.
I might stick this on now...
Hmmmm...
Well, it's not terrible. But it's not great either...
I've purchased
Probably in order of preference:
These New Puritans - Hidden
Beach House - Teen Dream
Fyfe Dangerfield - Fly Yellow Moon
Thao with the get down stay down - know better learn faster
Lindstrom & Christabelle - Real Life Is No Cool
Chew Lips - Unicorn (still don't get this leave the good singles off the release trend)
first aid kit - the big black and the blue
Yeti Lane - S/T
Yeti Lane album is good!
There were albums out this month?
These for me
Four Tet - There is Love in you - absolutley love it
These New Puritans - Hidden - Like it a lot
Beach House - Teen Dream - revealing itself slowly but surely.
Lindstrom & Christabelle - Real Life Is No Cool - Good to Boogie to.
Owen Pallett
Everyone who said this is right. I really love this album, probably the best combination of 'popular' and classical music that I know of. Very impressive, very good. Go get it.
I really have got a lot of love for the White Hills record
Like a more fiery Oneida innit. Nice bunch of heavy pysch.
Pretty excited to get my hands on a proper copy of the Harvey Milk S/T, even if the cover art is naff. Hydrahead, you let me down for the first and hopefully the last time.
Looking with interest at the William Basinski and new Shining albums....
Struggling to finish a review of Skullflower, which is complicated because I can't work out how to sell it to people. It's great though.
Shining - Blackjazz
http://open.spotify.com/album/16aH8bxCmT8a2Two46ewqD
really?
owch
Beach House just arrived in the post today- fantastic
These New Puritans sounds as though it will be my album of the year
Four Tet is really good
The New Madlib album is really messed up and out there. To be expected. Apparently its the first in a series of one album a month! Not quite sure how he's going to pull it off but i'll be listening for sure.
I'm waiting for Magnetic Fields and Owen Pallett to arrive in the post, but what i've heard is great.
And of course, Los Campesinos! Which is second only to TNPS at the moment.
oh yeah
And the Nick Cave & Warren Ellis soundtrack to The Road is pretty cool as well
I'm sure its already been said,
but i've had There is Love in You, and the These New Puritans album on repeat all week!
Oh No Ono
with their new album 'Eggs'
Stupid name, magical music.
just listening now
don't sound like i expected them to
Home Blitz - Out of Phase
The Rebel - Incredible Hulk
Only 2010 released albums I've bought this year so far. Enjoying them both.
some essential noise
"Oltre" - Robert Curgenven -jan. 2010 ****
"The Invisible City" - B.J. Nilsen -jan 2010 (I bought it but haven't heard it yet)
"intermission 2000-2008" - Oren Ambarchi- Dec. 2009 ****
"Meagafauna" - YOGA - Oct 2009 ****
good rap records from jan 2010
yelawolf - trunk muzik vol 1
j stalin - prenuptial agreement
just added this to the sidebar
hopefully it'll be more useful than our month in records features of olde http://drownedinsound.com/lists/recommended-records
Don't forget Falling Down a Mountain
the new Tindersticks record is an absolute joy. One of the greatest bands ever finding their spark again.
The Musee Mecanique album
is as good as I thought it would be. Reminds me a little of Mercury Rev's Deserters Songs or Sparklehorse's more fragile moments. Excellent. As many have said above Teen Dream is pretty good also.
.
Roll The Dice - S/T (Digitalis)
Yellow Swans - Going Places (Type)
Definitely Fly Yellow Moon
It's a lovely record. Really shows what a great songwriter Fyfe can be.
I very much regret not getting the deluxe set now.
I think
i'm in love with that new beach house record, it's gorgeous! The same goes for owen pallets 'heartland'.
Cut and Paste By Spraynard
it's not really big or clever or anything like that but it's straight up fun punk rock, can't really ask for too much more imo.
These New Puritans - Hidden
It's like the Silcot enquiry set on the stage of Murder in The (Worcester) Cathedral.
I'm liking
Midlake - very well put together
Beach House - subtly good
Four Tet - nice in a glitchy way
Hot Chip - excellent choruses for the most part
Vampire Weekend - it's a grower
Remain to be convinced fully by
These New Puritans - When it's good it's good but Fire-Power and Attack Music are just annoying, is it just me?
Owen Pallett - maybe need to persist but so far struggling to enjoy the vocals and the composition sounds quite clumsy, will no doubt get ripped into for that
Tindersticks and Race Horses for me
apart from that nothing new has really bothered me this month, i bought lots of older stuff instead.
Jaga Jazzist
I haven't even heard anything else from January but this is impressing me a lot. I've only seen it mentioned once, so I'm either very very blind or this is a poor effort guys.
I only own 'A Livingroom Hush' by them.
I've had it for years, but still i could only hum you 2 tracks off it.
Not mentioned yet
but I do like Race Horses's Goodbye Falkenberg, not exactly the best thing I've heard this month (That probably goes to to Beach House, First Aid Kit, Four Tet and These New Puritans) but a decent enough start.
There's plenty of good stuff to come this month and next that I've heard in full or part.
New William Basinski, Vivian & Ondine, is lovely
Other than that, pretty much what's been said here already - Owen Pallett, Four Tet, Jaga Jazzist, Olafur Arnalds, Cave & Ellis.
I didn't see a mention for it, but Oh No Ono's Eggs is really good as well. Leaf are one of the most consistently interesting labels operating at the moment.
Highpoint Lowlife's Erik XVI remix EP is well worthy of investigation as well, some really interesting takes on the originals in techno/house/dubstep stylee.
Still haven't listened to Beach House, I need to rectify this very soon.
It's been a gorgeous month
The Road was a beautiful soundtrack and almost killed me and then Olafur Arnalds entered my life and blew Nick Cave out of the water and it's not often I say that, just sheer joy and plaintive beauty. Then I heard OK Go and Surfer Blood which were great, OK Go hve a song, 'I Love You So Much I Can't Breath' which soundtracked my month, for a while. After that the Soft Pack came into my world and made me replay my 1990s album at maximum volume and yell along. Then I heard Four Tet and SHLOMO within the week and oh God, these were the best two for ages, Four Tet mesmerised me and Shlomo changed things from somebody who thought dnb ws for stoner idiots to a disciple of he and his genre. And then the weather brightened up and Contra played and replayed and my wonderful, wonderful month came to an end.
In the month: one love affair (non consummated)
One obsession with the double bass
Two work commendations
